What Does SPF Stand For?

SPF stands for **Sun Protection Factor**. It's a crucial term when it comes to sunscreen and protecting your skin from the sun's harmful rays.

Understanding SPF: The Basics

- UVB Rays: These are the rays responsible for sunburn and contribute to skin aging and skin cancer.

- SPF Number: The SPF number indicates the level of protection against UVB rays. Higher SPF values mean greater protection.

- Not a Timer: Contrary to popular belief, SPF doesn't tell you how long you can stay in the sun. It measures UV radiation, not exposure time.

How Is SPF Determined?

Scientists conduct indoor experiments to mimic noontime sun exposure. They calculate the Minimal Erythema Dose (MED)—the UV radiation needed to cause mild sunburn. The SPF value is derived by comparing sunburn with and without sunscreen.

Decoding SPF Numbers: What They Mean

- SPF 30: Offers twice as much protection as SPF 15, but not double the sun exposure time.

- Individual Variation: Everyone's UV threshold differs. Pale skin absorbs more UV light than dark skin, but all skin types benefit from SPF.

- Application: Apply SPF 30 or higher on exposed skin daily. Reapply every two hours outdoors, especially after swimming or sweating.
